Before Hugo Junkers developed the corrugated sheet metal construction method, aeroplanes were a compromise between weight and stability: they were usually built from a wooden frame covered with fabric. This construction method was lightweight, but quickly reached its limits. Smooth metal sheets offered greater robustness, but required extensive reinforcement and added to the weight.
In the early 1920s, his innovative design revolutionised aircraft construction: the characteristic corrugated sheet metal structure made aeroplanes lighter, more stable and more resilient. Today, this iconic design element features on the dials of our watches, linking aviation history with modern design ‘Made in Germany’.
